Pedra Roja is a marine bathing beach located in Moncofa, Castellón province, in the Valencian Community, Spain. The beach has an irregular closed configuration with perpendicular breakwaters for defense and a rigid maritime promenade. It is backed to the north by dunes and bordered to the south by Grau beach. The beach is composed of sand and pebbles and was artificially developed. It measures 597.8 meters along the high-tide line with an average width of 33.5 meters.

Water

Marine bathing water in the Júcar hydrographic demarcation. The water body is classified as a low-accumulation coastal zone with microtidal range and currents flowing from south to north. The coastal water mass is in good status according to the Water Framework Directive.

Location

Located in Moncofa municipality, Castellón province, Valencian Community, Spain. The beach is accessible by vehicle with parking available. Disabled access is provided.

Lifeguards and rescue services available. Public free toilets and paid toilets in beach bars. Showers and foot-wash facilities. Disabled access and accessible point service. Parking. Beach bar and chiringuito. Buoying and signage systems. Waste bins including selective recycling.

Season

Official bathing season: 1 June to 15 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2020–2023 periods shows Excellent quality at the monitoring point named Calle Columbretes. The water mass is classified as Good status. Monitoring is conducted weekly during the bathing season with inspections of visual parameters and maintenance conditions.

Risks

Low-frequency potential pollution sources identified: rainfall (low frequency, mild effect), urban sanitation (low frequency, mild effect), coastal discharges (low frequency, mild effect), rivers/canals (low frequency, mild effect), industrial installations (low frequency, mild effect), port facilities (low frequency, mild effect), and diffuse pollution (low frequency, mild effect). An intermittently discharging natural waterway (Acequia) at the northern boundary presents medium-level risk. No cyanobacteria proliferation has been detected in the Valencian coastal waters.
