Playa de Poniente is a recreational bathing beach located in Cartagena, in the Mar Menor coastal maritime zone of the Murcia region. The beach is 230 meters long and 52 meters wide, with coarse sand substrate and a gentle slope. It has high visitor numbers from local users on a daily basis and features a promenade along its length.

Water

Free bathing water in the Mar Menor, a coastal maritime zone. Micromareal tidal range. No currents, whirlpools, or rip tides reported. The seabed is covered with seagrass (Cymodocea nodosa) and macroalgae (Caulerpa prolifera).

Location

Located in Cartagena, Murcia region. The beach has good pedestrian access and good vehicle access, as well as good disabled access. UTM coordinates (ETRS89, Huso 30): X: 696841; Y: 4168932.

Facilities

Foot wash stations (3 units distributed throughout the zone). Waste collection daily. Beach cleaning daily (mixed type). Toilet facilities (1 unit, paid). Benches and tables available. Bins distributed throughout the zone. Kayaking, snorkeling, and paddle surfing allowed. No lifeguards, no medical services, no showers, no public water fountains, no changing rooms, no umbrella or sunbed rentals, no bars, no kiosks.

Monitoring is conducted fortnightly during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored fortnightly during the bathing season using visual inspection parameters and bacterial analysis. Classification is determined seasonally as Excellent, Good, Sufficient, or Insufficient based on current season and previous three years of results. Potential short-term contamination factors include rainfall (low frequency, mild effect), urban wastewater treatment (low frequency, mild effect), and coastal discharge points (low frequency, mild effect). Macroalgae risk classification: Low. Phytoplankton risk classification: Moderate. Jellyfish risk classification: Moderate. No red flag warnings for jellyfish have been reported at this beach.

Risks

Low-frequency rainfall can bring agricultural drainage from the Rambla de la Carrasquilla. Occasional infiltration from urban wastewater treatment systems may affect the beach. Nautical club overflow points occasionally become clogged with stagnant water from the dock area. Jellyfish are commonly present but typically do not cause health problems. Filamentous algae proliferation may occur during generalized eutrophication episodes in the Mar Menor.
