Mar de Cristal is a bathing beach in Cartagena located in a coastal maritime zone within the Segura River Basin hydrographic demarcation, adjacent to the Mar Menor. The beach extends 1,100 metres in length with an average width of 38 metres and features golden sand composition. Water quality was rated as excellent during 2000–2009 and continued to be excellent in 2010 and 2011. The beach supports high occupancy with approximately 12,675 maximum bathers daily and is equipped with urban amenities including a promenade with complementary services.

Coastal maritime water body. Beach length 1,100 metres, mean width 38 metres. Golden sand bottom with natural origin. Water renewal rate less than 7 days. Tidal range less than 2 metres (microtidal).

Foot-washing stations (9 installations, discharge directly to sand). Toilets (2 installations). Promenade with complementary services. No showers or changing rooms reported.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent for the period 2000–2011. No significant pollution pressure identified. Toxic phytoplankton sampling conducted in 2008 and 2009 showed practically no presence of potentially toxic cells throughout the bathing season. Risk level: null or very low. No authorized discharges in the adjacent area.

Risks

Toxic phytoplankton proliferation is a natural phenomenon that rarely affects public health; risk is null or very low in this location. Short-duration episodes are improbable. Jellyfish appear seasonally, with peak abundance from early spring to late summer; jellyfish production is highly variable.
