Coastal maritime water body in Mar Menor. Golden sand bottom with sandy composition. Water renewal rate less than 7 days. Micro-tidal regime with amplitude less than 2 metres.

Location

Located in La Manga del Mar Menor near Cartagena, Spain. Coordinates: UTM 699103.72, 4167734.22 (Zone 30N); Latitude 37.633339°, Longitude -0.744833°. The beach is adjacent to a camping zone.

Water Quality

Water quality was rated as excellent from 2000–2009 and remained excellent in 2010 and 2011. No significant pollution pressure identified. No authorized discharge points in the adjacent area. Toxic phytoplankton monitoring in 2008 and 2009 found no potentially toxic cells. Risk of toxic phytoplankton proliferation is null. Ecological status of the Mar Menor water body is acceptable.

Risks

Jellyfish appear seasonally with maximum abundance between early spring and late summer. Jellyfish production is highly variable. Short-duration episodes are unlikely.
