Platja de sa Tuna is an enclosed beach located in the municipality of Begur in Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated amidst rocky coastline corresponding to the Begur mountains and is bordered to the north and south by rock formations and cliffs. It has coarse sand with an average width of 23 metres and a total surface area of 1,497 square metres. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months and is set in a residential environment.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing zone is part of water body C14 (Begur-Blanes), classified as deep rocky type with low continental influence. Mean salinity ranges from 27.3–38.6 psu. Mean water temperatures: June 20.2°C, July 22.7°C, August 23.3°C, September 21.5°C. Significant wave height averages 0.61 metres with a mean period of 5.82 seconds. The hydrological response velocity index is high. Only one watercourse, the Riera de sa Tuna, reaches the beach and is currently buried.

Location

Begur municipality, Baix Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is accessible from the town of Begur (population 4,304 inhabitants). A subsurface car park has been constructed a few metres from the mouth of the Riera de sa Tuna stream.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring is conducted weekly over 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental inspections occur a minimum of 3 times per week.

Water Quality

Monitoring is conducted under the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) surveillance plan. Microbiological control includes weekly analysis for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci following Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental monitoring includes visual inspection evaluating water transparency, colour, floating solids, vegetation remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Classification is based on analytical results according to European bathing water directive standards.

Risks

The Riera de sa Tuna stream, though buried, is an external freshwater input requiring monitoring. General surveillance includes detection of phytoplankton proliferations, hydrocarbons, and other harmful substances.
