Platja de sa Riera is a narrow, enclosed beach located among rocky cliffs in the municipality of Begur in Catalonia, Spain. The beach has a very steep water entry and coarse sandy substrate. With dimensions of approximately 202 meters in length and 63 meters in average width, it covers a surface area of 16,426 square meters. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months and is situated in a residential setting bounded by cliffs to the north and south.

Water

The bathing zone belongs to the Mediterranean Sea within the water body classification system C12 (Pals: sandy type of moderate continental influence). The zone experiences moderate continental influence with salinity ranging from 31.6 to 38.2 psu. Water temperatures vary seasonally: 20.1°C in June, 22.8°C in July, 23.3°C in August, and 21.5°C in September. Predominant conditions include weak northeasterly winds and calm sea state. Wave heights average 0.61 meters with a mean period of 5.82 seconds and frequent northerly direction.

Location

The beach is located in Begur, Baix Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. It is situated on the Mediterranean coast among the rocky terrain of the Begur mountains. More information about the beach and its facilities is available on the Begur municipal website.

Facilities

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Control monitoring occurs during 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological testing and minimum three weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly according to European Directive 2006/7/CE criteria. Microbiological monitoring occurs every Saturday, measuring Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections are conducted at least three times per week, evaluating water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

The beach is located in a coastal zone with high hydrological response velocity (VRH) to heavy rainfall events. A stream (Riera de sa Riera), currently occupied by the beach access road, is the only freshwater input during intense precipitation. The monitoring program specifically tracks phytoplankton proliferation, hydrocarbons, and other potentially harmful substances.
