Platja d'Illa Roja is a narrow beach located in Begur, Girona, in Catalonia's semi-natural and residential coastal zone. The beach is 189 metres long with an average width of 18 metres and covers an area of 2,159 square metres. It has a steep entry gradient and coarse sand sediment. The beach experiences medium summer occupation.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Hydrological response velocity index is high. Average salinity ranges from 35.8 to 38.4 psu with moderate continental influence. Water temperatures: June 20.0°C, July 22.6°C, August 23.1°C, September 21.5°C. Significant wave height 0.61 metres, mean period 5.82 seconds. Predominant wave direction is north. General circulation follows a cyclonic pattern with coastal and north-eastward currents. The beach receives no natural freshwater input.

Location

Begur municipality, Baix Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach borders small rocky outcrops to the north with continuation towards Racó beach and mountain terrain to the south.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring conducted over 17 consecutive weeks with weekly analysis on Saturdays.

Water Quality

Monitored under the European Bathing Water Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) analysed weekly. Environmental inspections carried out minimum three times weekly. Water quality assessed for transparency, colouration, floating solids, marine vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons and jellyfish presence. Monitoring includes sand and beach access condition inspections.

Risks

Potential phytoplankton proliferations monitored under the phytoplankton control programme since 2000. Occasional hydrocarbon or other harmful substance detection triggers toxicity analysis.
