Platja d'es Monestrí is an open beach located in Calonge municipality within Palamós bay on the Catalan coast. The beach is 272 meters long with an average width of 31 meters, covering 8,640 square meters. It has very coarse sand sediment and a very steep water entry slope. The beach environment is entirely urban and experiences high occupation during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water body type: Rocky deep sea with low continental influence (C14 water mass). Salinity range: 36.7–38.5 psu. Water temperatures: June 20.6°C, July 23.7°C, August 24.0°C, September 22.5°C. Significant wave height: 0.87 m with average period of 5.55 seconds and predominant NNE direction. Predominant sea state: slight ripple. Coastline evolution: −0.29 m per year.

Location

Calonge municipality (10,428 inhabitants) in Baix Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated within Palamós bay, bordered to the east by Palamós Gran beach and to the west by the first groyne of Sant Antoni beach.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring: weekly on Saturdays during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental monitoring: minimum 3 weekly inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly for microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental monitoring includes weekly sampling and visual inspection evaluating water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The Riera Aubi is the only natural watercourse discharging to the bathing zone, during heavy rainfall events.

Risks

The area has a high Hydrological Response Velocity Index (VRH), indicating rapid hydrological response during heavy rainfall episodes. Phytoplankton blooms may occur naturally and are monitored; most form only colored patches without risk to swimmers, though toxic species can trigger management protocols. Jellyfish presence is monitored.
