Platja d'Altafulla is a semi-enclosed beach in the municipality of Altafulla, Tarragona, located on the Catalan coast in a residential urban setting. The beach is 1,000 metres long with an average width of 32 metres and covers 30,504 square metres. It is bounded naturally by rocks on its left side and opens towards Tamarit Beach near the Club Nàutic d'Altafulla. The beach experiences medium summer occupancy.

Water

Mediterranean Sea bathing zone designated as water mass C25 (Cubelles-Altafulla): shallow sandy type with low continental influence. The beach has a very steep water entry slope. Medium-grained sand sediment with D50 = 0.27 mm. Mean salinity range 35.1–38.5 psu. Significant wave height 74 cm with mean period 6 seconds. The water body experiences cyclonic circulation with a southwestward coastal current.

Location

Altafulla municipality (4,685 inhabitants), Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated south of the Gaià river mouth by approximately 600 metres. It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea with an orientation towards the south-southeast.

Season

First week of June to the third week of September. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly on Saturdays. Environmental inspections occur a minimum of three times weekly during the 17-week consecutive monitoring period.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental parameters assessed include water transparency, colour, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The bathing water belongs to water mass C25 classified as a shallow sandy type with low continental influence.

Risks

The Gaià river, located 600 metres south of the beach, typically presents only stagnant water in the back area of the beach, but during heavy rainfall directly affects bathing water quality. La Rasa stream normally does not reach the sea but discharges into the bathing zone during heavy rainfall or anthropogenic reasons. The area has a high Hydrological Response Velocity Index (VRH), indicating rapid hydrological response to rainfall events. The beach experiences coastline evolution of -5.84 metres per year.
