Platja del Somorrostro is a urban beach in Barcelona located between Olympic Port to the northeast and Gas Pier to the southwest. It has medium-grain sand with a steep water entry gradient and experiences high occupancy levels during summer months. The beach is situated in a densely populated urban environment within Barcelona city.

Mediterranean Sea coastal bathing water. The water body is classified as a sandy, shallow Mediterranean type with low continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 36.5 to 38.5 psu. Average water temperatures are 21.0°C in June, 23.8°C in July, 24.0°C in August, and 23.4°C in September. Predominant wind direction is south with weak intensity. Typical sea state is calm with significant wave height of 0.74 meters and average period of 6 seconds.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored biweekly from June to September according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Quality classification is determined based on fecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci. Temporary classifications are expressed as Excellent, Good (suitable for bathing), or Insufficient (not suitable for bathing). Annual classifications are determined from four years of analytical data and include categories: Excellent, Good, Sufficient, or Insufficient.

Risks

Water inputs can affect the bathing area during rainfall from Gas Pier, conveying rainwater from the Diagonal-Barceloneta and Ribera catchments along with a fraction of wastewater through combined sewer discharges (DSU). The coastline shows erosion with evolution rates of -4.9 to -1.2 meters per year.
