Platja del Racó is a semi-enclosed beach located in the southern part of Pals Bay near Begur in Catalonia, Spain. The beach is 330 metres long with an average width of 46 metres and covers an area of 21,684 square metres. It features very coarse sand and a steep water entry gradient. The beach is situated in a semi-urban residential environment and experiences high occupancy levels during summer.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water. The water body is classified as C12 Pals, a sandy-type water mass with moderate continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 35.9 to 38.4 psu. Water temperatures are 20.1°C in June, 22.8°C in July, 23.1°C in August, and 21.4°C in September. Wave height is typically 0.61 metres with a mean period of 5.82 seconds. The coastline is eroding at a rate of 1.57 metres per year.

Location

Begur municipality in the Baix Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach borders Pals Great Beach to the north and a rocky area with access to Illa Roja Beach to the south.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring occurs for 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological testing on Saturdays and a minimum of 3 weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control tests for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci are performed weekly. Environmental monitoring includes visual inspection of water transparency, colour, floating debris, vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach receives water runoff only during heavy rainfall through a former stream now occupied by the beach access road.

Risks

The beach is located in an area with a high hydrological response velocity index, indicating rapid water runoff during heavy rainfall events. Phytoplankton bloom monitoring is conducted to detect harmful algae.
