Platja Gran de Pals is an open sandy beach located in the municipality of Pals in the Baix Empordà comarca of Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach has an average width of 62 metres, a length of 1,681 metres, and a total surface area of 101,511 square metres. It is situated in a semi-natural environment with an important dune zone, bordered to the north by Platja del Grau and to the south by Platja del Racó. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Open sandy beach with coarse sand (D50 = 0.72 mm). Average width 62 metres, length 1,681 metres, surface area 101,511 square metres. Very steep water entry gradient. Coastline evolving at -0.12 metres per year. Water temperature ranges from 20.2°C in June to 23.3°C in August, with salinity 22.2–38.3 psu. Significant wave height 0.61 metres with mean period 5.82 seconds, most frequent direction N. Moderate continental influence. Predominant wind direction E-weak. Predominant sea state rippled.

Location

Pals municipality (population 2,698) in the Baix Empordà comarca of Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is oriented NEE and borders the Mediterranean Sea.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring conducted over 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological testing on Saturdays and minimum 3 weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality monitored weekly according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Water quality classification determined weekly based on analytical results. The beach receives no direct input from natural permanent or temporary watercourses. Nearest river mouth (Rec del Molí de Pals) located approximately 1,000 metres to the north.

Risks

The beach does not receive direct discharge from natural water courses. The programme for monitoring phytoplankton proliferation is in place to detect and monitor algal blooms that may pose risks to public health and marine ecosystems.
