Playa Las Gaviotas is a 1000-metre long bathing beach in San Javier, located in La Manga del Mar Menor. The beach has a natural origin with golden sand composition and is situated in an urban area with high occupancy. Water quality was classified as excellent during 2000–2011. The beach experiences micromareal tidal conditions with water renewal in less than 7 days.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal waters within the Segura River Basin Hydrographic Demarcation. The beach section is 1000 metres long with an average width of 25 metres, golden sand bottom, and micromareal tidal amplitude (less than 2 metres). Water renewal occurs within 7 days.

Location

San Javier, La Manga del Mar Menor. The monitoring point (PM1) is located at UTM 699250.45 X, 4176976.42 Y, latitude 37.716545°, longitude -0.740647°, zone 30N.

Facilities

Foot washing stations (2). No showers, toilets, or changing rooms are available.

Water Quality

Water quality was classified as excellent during 2000–2009 and remained excellent in 2010–2011. No significant pollution pressure is present. No authorized discharges occur in the adjacent area. Toxic phytoplankton sampling in 2008 and 2009 found no potentially toxic cells during bathing season. The coastal water body 'Mojón–Cabo de Palos' has good ecological status.

Risks

Toxic phytoplankton proliferation risk is null. Jellyfish have seasonal appearance periods with maximum abundance between spring and late summer; jellyfish production is highly variable.
