Platja Llarga is a sandy beach located in the municipality of Cubelles in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is 525 meters long with an average width of 31 meters and covers 16,156 square meters. It is situated in a semi-natural urban environment at the northern boundary of the Garraf district, with the Santa Maria stream forming its northeastern boundary and a breakwater separating it from the Foix river to the southwest. The beach experiences high summer occupancy and consists of fine sand with a steep water entry gradient.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water body code C24, classified as a sandy, shallow marine mass with low continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 36.6 to 38.4 practical salinity units. Average water temperatures are 22.2°C in June, 25.6°C in July, 26.0°C in August, and 24.9°C in September. Significant wave height averages 0.74 meters with a mean period of 6 seconds. The Foix river and Santa Maria stream are the main sources of freshwater inflow during rainfall. The coastline is eroding at a rate of 1 meter per year.

Location

Cubelles, Barcelona Province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bounded by the Santa Maria stream to the northeast and a breakwater near Avenida del Mediterrani to the southwest. Further information on beach facilities is available at the Cubelles municipal website.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring is conducted for 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological sampling on Saturdays.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring includes weekly analysis of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes minimum three weekly inspections assessing water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach is served by the Cubelles-Cunit wastewater treatment system with biological treatment and a primary submarine outfall located at Cunit beach, plus an emergency outfall.

Risks

The beach is located in an area with high hydrological response velocity. Phytoplankton proliferations are monitored during the bathing season, though these are typically natural phenomena that form colored patches without risk to swimmers. The Foix river and Santa Maria stream can discharge freshwater near the bathing zone during heavy rainfall.
