Puerta del Mar is an urban beach in Almuñecar, Granada, located on the Mediterranean coast of Andalucía. The beach stretches 1185 metres in length with an average width of 50 metres and features dark sand and gravel composition. It is a natural coastal water body with deep waters and calm bathing conditions, situated within the Maro-Salobreña cliff area. The beach experiences high occupancy and is well-developed with modern facilities.

Water

Mediterranean coastal water body classified as natural Mediterranean waters influenced by Atlantic waters. Bathymetry shows deep waters with mud and sand substrate. Micromareal tidal range of 0–2 metres. Currents are dominant towards the northeast. Wave regime is dominant from the east and east-southeast, associated with Levante wind. Moderately exposed to wave action.

Location

Almuñecar, Granada, Andalucía, Spain. The beach is easily accessible on foot and by car. Signage is present throughout the area.

Facilities

Red Cross post. Lifeguard equipment and surveillance present. Toilets, showers, and waste bins available. Disabled access provided. Signage and danger warnings in place. Boardwalk and catwalks available. Water sports rental available. Marina del Este port is nearby. No scuba diving zone. No yacht club.

Season

1 June to 30 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2013–2016 seasons). Short-term contamination risk is low and microbiological in nature, with a 24-hour recovery timeframe. Identified pollution sources include diffuse land use impacts and the Almuñecar treatment plant (EDAR ALMUÑECAR). The Río Verde is a contributing watercourse.
