Puerto Rey is a 1,200-metre sandy beach in Vera, Almería, located on the Mediterranean coast. The beach has a moderate width of 50 metres and is characterized by dark sand composed of gravel and rocks. It experiences moderately exposed conditions with moderate wave conditions and is classified as a natural, deep Mediterranean coastal water body uninfluenced by river discharge.

Water

Mediterranean coastal water, deep sandy substrate with gravel and rocks. Micromareal range of 0-2 metres. Currents dominate towards the east, east-southeast, and east-northeast. Waves predominantly from the east and east-northeast associated with Levante wind. Annual precipitation 200-400 millimetres with torrent index of 50-75 percent.

Location

Vera municipality, Almería province, Andalucía, Spain. The beach is easily accessible on foot and by car. A sports port is located at Garrucha, 3 kilometres away.

Facilities

Red Cross post, rescue equipment, lifeguards, signage, boardwalks, disabled access, toilets, showers, waste bins, cleaning service, and nautical equipment rental.

Water Quality

Bathing water classified as Excellent for all monitoring seasons from 2013 to 2016. Short-duration contamination risk is low and microbiological in nature, with a maximum duration of 24 hours. Risk assessment based on deterministic methodology using UNE 150008 standard. Low risk of jellyfish, phytoplankton, and macroalgae proliferation.

Risks

Vera wastewater treatment plant (EDAR Vera) discharges 1,831,000 cubic metres per year. Diffuse pollution sources include land use in the influence zone, constructed and altered surfaces. Río Antas river course influences the area.
