Playa Puerto Rico is a coastal bathing beach located in Mogán, Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 284 metres long and 105 metres wide, with fine artificial sand substrate. It is sheltered from wave exposure and characterized by calm waters with tidal ranges of 1–3 metres. The beach is monitored for bathing quality from 1 February to 30 November each year.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococcus monitoring over four years according to RD 1341/2007. The coastal water body ES70GCTII is in 'good' ecological status (biological and physicochemical) with a total status of 'good or better'. Trichodesmium cyanobacteria proliferation episodes occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensively in 2017.

Risks

Diffuse pollution sources: Puerto Deportivo Escala and Base de Puerto Rico marina. Point pollution sources: Puerto Rico wastewater treatment plant (EDAR) discharge; submarine outfall; two septic tanks (Puerto Rico I and II); EDAM Tourin Europeo S.A. facility; brine discharge from desalination plant. Barranco de Puerto Rico watercourse is a potential vector. Short-duration contamination episodes may include stormwater runoff from heavy rainfall; raw or treated urban wastewater from pipe breaks, treatment failures, or unauthorized discharges; brine discharges; and accidental hydrocarbon or organic waste spills from ship cleaning. Jellyfish and sea urchin risk: none. Macroalgae risk: none.
