Ponente Teiro is a sandy beach bathing area in the urban municipality of Varazze, Liguria, Italy. Located in a coastal zone at the mouth of the Torrente Teiro, the beach is bordered by private beach establishments, restaurants, and tourist services. The waterfront promenade Giorgio Costa and the SS1 road are situated upstream. The bathing area has been classified as GOOD for the four-year monitoring period 2020–2023.

Water

Coastal water body covering 0.321 km² at the mouth of Torrente Teiro. Part of the Varazze-Arenzano hydrological unit. Classified as coastal waters with rocky terrain and low stability.

Location

Varazze, Liguria province, Savona. In the western part of the Torrente Teiro estuary, near the Giorgio Costa waterfront promenade and SS1 road. Municipal offices: Viale Nazioni Unite 5, 17019 Varazze SV.

Water Quality

Classification: GOOD (2020–2023 monitoring period). Two sewage conduits discharge approximately 175–190 m east of the sampling station and approximately 200–1080 m from the shore. Urban pollution sources and port-related pollution from Varazze tourist marina located approximately 840 m west of the sampling station are present.

Risks

Heavy rainfall and increased stream flow may transport effluent downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have been recorded in the regional monitoring area, with exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit documented in July 2018 and August 2019, and values of 10,000–30,000 cells/litre in August 2019 and July 2020. Inhalation of aerosolised toxins from Ostreopsis ovata causes temporary and reversible respiratory tract effects and fever in sensitive individuals.
