Solaro is a sandy beach located in Varazze, Liguria, in a residential coastal area. The beach is characterized by sandy and pebbly composition and is bordered by private beach establishments, restaurants, and accommodation facilities. A seafront promenade and the SS1 road run along the upper part of the beach. The bathing water area covers 0.550 km² and has been classified as excellent for the 2019–2022 period.

Coastal water body (Varazze-Arenzano) in the Ligurian Sea. Water area: 0.550 km². The coastal zone is characterized by mountainous terrain with low water stability.

Location

Varazze, Liguria, in the province of Savona. The beach is situated in a residential area of the town, with access via Viale Nazioni Unite. Parking and facilities are available at private beach establishments.

Facilities

Private beach establishments with services, restaurants, and accommodation structures. Lifeguard services and emergency contact (112) are available. Animals are permitted in the area.

Water Quality

Classification for 2019–2022: Excellent. Potential pollution sources include urbanized surroundings and two sewage outfalls located just outside the western boundary of the bathing water, discharging approximately 200 m and 1,070 m from the shore. Heavy rainfall can increase stream flow and transport effluent downstream. No specific monitoring or protective measures are currently in place.

Risks

Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have occurred in the region in recent years. Monitoring station NAUT in Varazze recorded an exceedance of the limit (30,000 cells/litre) in August 2019, with values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre recorded in August 2019 and July 2020 and 2022. Inhalation of aerosols from Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary and reversible respiratory problems and fever in sensitive individuals. Discharge from Torrent Teiro at the western boundary may impact water quality.
