Port Mélite beach is located on the northeast side of Groix island, the second largest island in Brittany. The island measures 8 km long and 3 km wide at its maximum, composed primarily of a micaschist plateau. The beach is situated in an area with low cliffs and a wide rocky platform characteristic of the island's eastern side. The beach is a non-occasional bathing zone with instantaneous attendance during the bathing season exceeding 10 bathers.

Groix island, off the southern coast of Morbihan, Brittany. Port Mélite beach is located on the northeast side of the island.

Water Quality

As of the 2013 bathing season, Port Mélite beach waters were classified as 'Excellent' quality. Water quality monitoring conducted by the health authority (ARS) tracked enterococcus and E. coli concentrations. Historical data analysis and 2020 monitoring results are documented. Water quality variations were observed in relation to rainfall patterns.

Risks

Potential pollution sources identified on the watershed include a stormwater outlet, a pumping station near the beach, wastewater network infrastructure, and occasional sewage discharges. Contamination episodes involving fecal indicator bacteria (enterococci and E. coli) have been documented.
