Protaras Bay is a bathing water area comprising two natural coves located on the island of Cyprus. The northern cove features a sandy beach while the southern cove is rocky. The sandy beach is approximately 720 metres long with an average water depth of 1.5 metres and a maximum depth of 3.5 metres. The beach has been designated with Blue Flag status and can accommodate a maximum of 2500 daily swimmers.

Water

Coastal water body named Protaras. The seabed is rocky limestone sandstone. The beach is 720 metres long with an average water depth of 1.5 metres and a maximum depth of 3.5 metres. A small island exists approximately 100 metres offshore in front of the northern cove.

Location

Protaras Bay is located in the Famagusta District, within the Municipality of Paralimni. The monitoring point is positioned at coordinates 34.0587°E, 35.0131°N (ETRS89).

Facilities

Toilets, changing rooms, showers, umbrellas, sun loungers, waste collection bins. Lifeguard services with rescue equipment are provided from 09:00 to 18:30. Two floating platforms offer water sports services and berths for recreational vessels. The beach is managed by the Municipality of Paralimni and has been designated with Blue Flag status.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data since Cyprus's EU accession in 2004. The coastal body to which this bathing water belongs is in good ecological status. Monitoring data from 2004-2007 showed nitrate concentrations and chlorophyll-a levels below 2 mg/l and 2 μg/l respectively, with no eutrophication recorded at the monitoring station.

Risks

Moderate risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton development. Water sports and recreational vessels present a potential pollution source in the northern cove. Possible source of pollution from runoff and infiltration from irrigated green areas in tourist developments and agricultural cultivation. The area is within a nitrate-vulnerable zone.
