Hatzixeni Beach is an artificial sandy beach located within a bay with rocky sides in the Protaras water body. The beach has an average width of 10 metres and a length of 60 metres, situated within the Natura 2000 European Ecological Network. The beach is enclosed by embankments with slopes lined with rock blocks, and a wooden staircase provides access from the adjacent parking area. Hotels and green spaces are located nearby.

Water

Protaras water body. Sandy substrate with occasional rock outcrops mainly at the edges of the eastern side of the bay. Average water depth is 2 metres with a maximum depth of 4 metres.

Location

Located in Paralimni Municipality, Ammochostos District, Cyprus. Parking area is available adjacent to the beach with wooden stair access.

Facilities

No public facilities or lifeguard services are currently available. The beach plan includes provisions for changing rooms and toilets, but these have not yet been constructed. No umbrellas, loungers, or waste bins are available. Beach cleaning is the responsibility of Paralimni Municipality.

Water Quality

Water quality is not currently monitored. However, the beach is located within zones vulnerable to nitrate pollution. Potential pollution sources include runoff from irrigation water of nearby green spaces and possible wastewater discharge from nearby hotel facilities. Neighbouring monitored beaches have been classified as excellent under Directive 76/160/EEC.

Risks

Moderate risk of short-term pollution from wastewater discharge from hotel facilities and passing vessels. Moderate risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton development based on identified pollution sources.
