Quarteira is a coastal bathing water located on an urban beach with intensive use in the city of Quarteira. The beach features wide golden sand spanning 1,650 metres, divided by several moles and bordered by a long seaside avenue. The tidal range is 3.4 metres with average wave height of 0.5 metres, and the prevailing wind direction is east to south-east.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2024 complies with Decreto-Lei 135/09 of 3 June. Bathing was advised against or prohibited on one day during the 2024 bathing season due to short-term pollution events. Microbiological contamination may occur due to sporadic malfunction of sanitation and rainwater drainage infrastructures or during heavy rainfall events causing surface run-off and overflows.

Risks

Short-term pollution is scarce but possible. Microbiological contamination may result from sanitation infrastructure failures or intense precipitation. Cyanobacteria proliferation is unlikely; macroalgae proliferation is uncommon; phytoplankton proliferation is unlikely.
