Forte Novo is a coastal bathing water located on a beach with restricted use associated with sensitive natural systems. The beach features golden sand and is situated adjacent to the eastern mole of Quarteira beach near the urban area. Low, soft ochre-coloured cliffs border the beach, which extends 470 metres along the coast.

Coastal water body, CWB-II-6, associated with Ribeiras do Algarve river basin. Beach length: 470 metres. Tidal range: 3.4 metres. Mean wave height: 0.5 metres. Predominant wind direction: east to southeast.

Location

Municipality of Loulé, Algarve region, Portugal. Located in the area adjacent to the eastern mole of Quarteira beach and near the urban zone.

Season

June 1st to September 30th, 2025. Monthly sampling frequency.

Water Quality

Water quality classification in 2024 complies with Decreto-Lei 135/09 of June 3rd. No days of bathing being advised against or prohibited due to short-term pollution events occurred during bathing season 2024. Short-term pollution is scarce but microbiological contamination may occur due to sporadic malfunction of sanitation and rainwater drainage systems or intense precipitation causing surface run-off and overflows.

Risks

Potential for microbiological contamination from sanitation infrastructures and rainwater drainage systems during intense rainfall events. Cyanobacteria proliferation is unlikely. Macroalgae proliferation is uncommon. Phytoplankton proliferation is unlikely.
