Riccione - Foce Marano 50m N is a sandy beach bathing area located in the municipality of Riccione in Emilia-Romagna. The beach extends approximately 400 metres and borders the Marano river embankment to the south. The area has a high level of tourism with numerous hotels and beach establishments, and lifeguard services are present during the bathing season. The beach width varies between 120–140 metres as of 2018.

Water

Coastal marine water in a flood plain with high stability. The bathing area extends over 0.409 km². The beach borders the Marano river embankment and is not protected by cliffs.

Location

Located in the municipality of Riccione, province of Rimini, Emilia-Romagna. The bathing area is situated near the mouth of the Marano torrent, approximately 50 metres north of the river outlet.

Facilities

Six beach establishments with first aid services, toilets accessible to disabled users, hot showers, no architectural barriers, sports facilities, and food and beverage outlets. Lifeguard service is present during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (reference years 2019–2022). Escherichia coli (90th percentile): 80 CFU/100 ml; Escherichia coli (95th percentile): 117 CFU/100 ml. Intestinal enterococci (90th percentile): 30 CFU/100 ml; Intestinal enterococci (95th percentile): 38 CFU/100 ml. An anomalous event occurred on 26 July 2022 when Escherichia coli exceeded legal limits; this was classified as an anomalous situation by the European Commission and the analytical data were replaced with values from the return sample of 28 July 2022.

Risks

Potential pollution risk from the Marano torrent mouth located south of the bathing area, which receives discharge from Riccione's sewage treatment plant and can activate stormwater overflow systems during intense rainfall, discharging excessive flow into the torrent. The torrent mouth includes discharges from the treatment plant bypass and an outlet called 'Casella nera'. Eutrophication risk is possible due to the proximity of the Marano torrent mouth. The area is subject to sand extraction for beach nourishment.
