Water

River Edo, a Cantabrian-Atlantic siliceous river. Drainage basin of 82 km² with mean basin slope of 20.7%. Environmental flow rate of 0.13 m³/s. Four-year return period flow of 26 m³/s. Maximum monthly discharge occurs in December; minimum in July. Mean annual precipitation 1,091 mm.

Location

Castro Caldelas, Ourense province, Galicia. Access via the OU-536 road towards Montemiao with a left turn before arrival; directional blue signs mark the route to the pools. Parking is available. Elevation 675 metres.

Water Quality

Water quality monitoring conducted 2011–2015 according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations measured against sufficiency thresholds (90th percentile). Possible contamination episodes occur when discharge falls below 0.0036 m³/s. Water quality classification data shown in historical charts from 2011–2015.

Risks

Short-term contamination risks identified from sewage systems (Estada Sas and Penelas nuclei at 3,000 m), diffuse pollution from livestock and agricultural runoff, user self-contamination during peak weekend use, organic waste accumulation, accidental or illegal discharges, and dead animals. Risk increases when pool water volume is abnormally reduced and during high-flow gate closure periods.
