Saint Michel Beach is located in Batz-sur-Mer, a small commune on the Guérande Peninsula in Loire-Atlantique, France. The beach sits on the southern coast facing the Atlantic Ocean, bordered by the 'wild coast' and characterized by significant dune massifs. The area has experienced strong economic transition from fishing, agriculture, and salt farming to tourism. The beach has maintained excellent and stable water quality for over 10 years.

Atlantic Ocean coastal bathing area. The beach is bordered by the 'wild coast' and characterized by significant dune formations including the Govelle and Grand'Vallée dune massifs.

Location

Batz-sur-Mer, Loire-Atlantique, in the Pays de la Loire region, part of the Cap Atlantique intercommunal territory. Located on the southern coast of the Guérande Peninsula facing the Atlantic Ocean.

Season

15 June to 15 September. Profile review required every 2 years if water quality degrades, otherwise every 3-4 years.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent and stable for over 10 years under both the 76/160/CEE Directive (classification 10A from 2007-2010) and the 2006/7/CE Directive (Excellent classification from 2004-2010). One pollution episode recorded on 03/07/2007 involving bacteriological contamination from wastewater system malfunction, resulting in a bathing prohibition.

Risks

Non-conforming wastewater systems located 30 m from the bathing zone (low to moderate impact). Dysfunction of a discharge station located 20 m from the bathing zone (low to moderate impact) with high-level alert indicators.
