San Mauro Mare is a sandy beach bathing area in the Emilia-Romagna region extending from 300 metres south of the Rubicone River mouth to the San Mauro Pascoli/Bellaria Igea Marina municipal boundary. The beach is protected along its entire length by a series of emergent breakwaters spaced approximately 20 metres apart, each averaging 90 metres in length. The beach is experiencing erosion and receives high visitor numbers.

Water

Coastal marine waters. Water body classification: coastal plain waters with high stability (Acque marino costiere: piana alluvionale ad alta stabilità). Area extends 0.577 km. The water body receives the Vena Piccola Consortium drainage ditch.

Location

San Mauro Pascoli, Forlì-Cesena province, Emilia-Romagna region, Italy. Located between Rubicone River mouth and Bellaria Igea Marina boundary. Beach width is 50–70 metres.

Facilities

Eight bathing establishments with first aid services, toilets accessible to disabled persons, hot showers, no architectural barriers, sports facilities, and food service points.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (reference years 2015–2018). Escherichia coli (90th percentile): 99 CFU/100 ml; (95th percentile): 153 CFU/100 ml. Intestinal enterococci (90th percentile): 40 CFU/100 ml; (95th percentile): 53 CFU/100 ml. The area is subject to sand replenishment and sand extraction activities. No anomalous situations occurred during bathing seasons 2015–2018.

Risks

Seven stormwater discharges (separate drainage networks) and one emergency overflow from the separate sewage network. The emergency overflow (5SF) can discharge only in case of system failure. Macroalgae proliferation of genus Ulva occurred in July–August 2018 on the central-northern coastal section. Potential eutrophication from emergency overflow discharges.
