Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Seeweiher Mengerskirchen is a shallow lake located in the Westerwald region at 370 metres elevation, surrounded by forests and meadows. The water body has been dammed since 1452 and historically served to regulate water flow for mills downstream. The lake covers 11.2 hectares with a maximum depth of 4.05 metres and mean depth of approximately 2 metres. It receives water from the Vöhlerbach and Winnauer Bach. Swimming is permitted only from a designated beach on the western shore.

Water

Shallow lake (weiher) with a surface area of 11.2 hectares, maximum depth of 4.05 metres, and mean depth of 1.91 metres. Water inflow occurs from the Vöhlerbach (also called Seebach) and the Winnauer Bach from northwestern and northern directions respectively. The water body is also used for fishing and inflatable boats.

Location

The lake lies approximately 14 kilometres from Weilburg and is situated between Waldernbach and Mengerskirchen along the L3046 road, which passes directly over the dam. Access to the bathing area is via the street 'Am Seeweiher' from the L3046. The bathing beach is located on the western shore.

Facilities

Sand beach 55 metres long and 13 metres wide with a 4-hectare adjacent meadow for lying down. Small children's water slide on the sand beach. Beach volleyball court north of the bathing beach. Toilets, showers, restaurant, and kiosk available.

Season

1 May 2026 to 1 September 2026.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent quality (ausgezeichnete Qualität) for 2021–2025. Water is tested before the bathing season and at least once monthly during the season for enterococci and Escherichia coli indicator bacteria. The lake is classified as eutrophic (eutroph 2) with medium-high risk of future cyanobacteria blooms. Observed cyanobacteria blooms during bathing season are low in frequency. No known pollution from wastewater, stormwater, or sewage discharges. Potential hygiene risk from livestock grazing in the catchment area cannot be excluded. Elevated nutrient loading may promote aquatic plants and phytoplankton; cyanobacteria blooms are possible and can cause allergic reactions and skin irritation.

Risks

Cyanobacteria blooms (blue-green algae) are possible due to elevated nutrient loading and medium-high risk classification. Potential hygiene risk from livestock grazing in the catchment area.
