Krombachtalsperre

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Krombachtalsperre is a reservoir in the Westerwald region on the border between Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate, created in 1947 for flood protection and electricity generation. The water body covers 63.3 hectares and is surrounded by forests and meadows with flat shorelines. It is used for bathing, diving, sailing, and windsurfing. The bathing area averages 250 daily visitors during the season.

Water

Reservoir (Talsperre) with a total water surface area of 63.3 hectares, maximum depth of 7.7 metres, and mean depth of approximately 3.1 metres. The bathing beach is 104 metres long and approximately 20 metres wide.

Location

23 kilometres north of Weilburg and 16 kilometres west of Herborn, located south of the B255 federal road. The bathing area access is on the southern part of the shore, reached via the road from Mademühlen to Oberrod through a campground. The dam and southeastern part are situated on the Hessian side and belong to Driedorf-Mademühlen.

Facilities

Toilets, showers, restaurant, kiosk, boat dock, and small sailing harbour. The bathing zone is designated and monitored.

Season

27 April 2026 to 31 August 2026.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent quality for the years 2021–2025 based on monitoring. Water is mesotrophic (trophic classification LAWA mesotroph 2). Indicator bacteria (enterococci and Escherichia coli) remain low in most samples. Nutrient loading is classified as still low. Large waterfowl populations have been observed, which may contribute to possible hygiene contamination. Potential wastewater discharges from Rhineland-Palatinate are possible but hygiene-related contamination from such sources is not currently known.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms observed towards the end of the bathing season in recent years. Cyanobacteria can produce substances that may adversely affect swimmer health, causing allergic reactions or skin irritation. Risk of future cyanobacteria mass occurrences is classified as low based on trophic status, though moderate observed mass occurrences during the bathing season have been documented. Water plants (macrophytes) and phytoplankton may increase. Reed and shrubland densely cover the shore zones.
