Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Waldsee Mengerskirchen is a small reservoir lake with a surface area of 2.1 hectares located in the Westerwälder Faulbachtal at 260 meters elevation, surrounded by forests and meadows. Created in 1974 as a recreational area, the lake features a dam on its southern shore measuring 9 meters high and 160 meters long. The water exhibits occasional fine white turbidity due to nearby clay pits upstream in the Faulbach watercourse. The lake is used for both bathing and fishing, attracting an average of 100 daily visitors during the season.

Water

Small reservoir (weiher) with a water surface area of 2.1 hectares and storage capacity of approximately 80,000 cubic meters. Maximum depth is 6.35 meters with a mean depth of 3.32 meters. Water inflow occurs from the Faulbach stream from the north.

Location

Located approximately 12 kilometers from Weilburg in Mengerskirchen municipality, along the L3281 between Winkels and Probbach. Access to the bathing area is from the eastern shore on the northern bank, reached via Probbach from the L3281.

Facilities

Two small sand beaches (main beach 18m × 6m, smaller beach 8m × 4m), shared sunbathing lawn, water slide on main beach, toilets, showers, changing rooms, kiosk, shade from surrounding and planted trees.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021). Monitoring shows low indicator bacteria levels (enterococci and escherichia coli consistently below or near 10 KBE/100ml). No wastewater, stormwater, or runoff pollution sources have been identified. Eutrophic classification (eutroph 2) with medium-high risk of future cyanobacteria blooms, though no observed mass occurrences during bathing season.

Risks

Potential for summer algae and cyanobacteria development due to medium to high nutrient content, though critical concentrations have not been recorded to date. Cyanobacteria can cause allergic reactions and skin irritation. White water turbidity may occur seasonally from upstream clay pits.
