Sønderkobbel is a sandy beach with small and large stones located on the outer part of Flensborg Fjord. The bathing area extends approximately 330 meters with a seabed of sand, scattered seaweed, and stones. Water depth reaches 0.5 meters at about 10 meters from shore and 1 meter at about 20 meters from shore. The beach is backed by a green area with tables and benches belonging to Sønderkobbel Camping, surrounded by cultivated fields.

Water

Marine brackish water with salinity of 16–24 ‰. The bathing area extends approximately 330 meters. Water depth reaches 0.5 meters at approximately 10 meters from shore and 1 meter at approximately 20 meters from shore. Current direction is predominantly westerly or northerly, determined by water movements in Sønderborg Bay and the outer Flensborg Fjord.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as satisfactory based on four years of data. Sampling by laboratory occurs from June 1 to September 15, analysing for E. coli and intestinal enterococci as faecal indicator bacteria. Analysis results from the last four years show problems with exceedances of bacterial limit values. Pollution is assessed to come predominantly from isolated households with overflows from septic systems and from fields where surface water drains directly to sea or via watercourse K24 which discharges into the middle of the bathing area.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria blooms is very small and no blue-green algae have been observed. Risk of phytoplankton blooms during the bathing season is small. Small risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up; swimming is generally discouraged in large quantities of seaweed as toxins can form in rotting seaweed and pathogenic bacteria may survive in seaweed for extended periods. Faecal bacteria risk is usually short-lived as current quickly dilutes and transports contamination away, though dispersion is slower when current direction is northerly or when there is no current.
