Drejby Strand (Kerneland)

Drejby Strand is a wide sandy beach approximately 3 km long and 20 m wide, located on the coast of Lillebælt in Denmark. The beach features scattered large stones, extensive sand dunes behind the shoreline, and a fine sand bottom with shallow water conditions suitable for children. The water is brackish with salinity levels between 16–24 ‰, and currents are influenced by water movements in the Outer Flensburg Fjord and Lillebælt, flowing in both northeasterly and southwesterly directions.

Water

Marine brackish water body with salinity of 16–24 ‰. The bathing area is approximately 3 km long and 20 m wide. Water depth of 0.5 m is reached at approximately 10 m from shore, and 1 m depth at approximately 35 m from shore. Dominant current directions are north–northeast or south–southwest based on 2006–2019 data.

Location

Drejby Strand is located on the coast of Lillebælt. Access is available via Kegnæsvej following signs to Drejby Kerneland, where a large parking area with kiosk, waste container, and toilets including disabled facilities is available. Additional parking is available at Drejby Strand Camping and Skovmose Camping. Summer house area access to the beach is also available from various paths in Skovmose.

Facilities

Lifeguard rescue rings are present. At the main Drejby Kerneland parking area: kiosk, waste container, toilets, and disabled access toilets. At Drejby Strand Camping: large parking area with kiosk and toilet access. At Skovmose Camping: kiosk and toilet access.

Water Quality

Bathing water is classified as excellent. Monitoring is conducted from 1 June to 15 September by Sønderborg Kommune through laboratory analysis for E. coli and intestinal enterococci bacteria. Analysis results from the last four years show no exceedances of limit values for fecal coliform bacteria. The most probable sources of fecal contamination are faulty connections, surface runoff from surrounding fields, or watercourses discharging to the sea. Contamination is always short-term.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria blooms is very low and no blue-green algae have been observed on this beach. No phytoplankton blooms have been observed during the bathing season. Small risk of seaweed (macroalgae) accumulation; bathing is generally discouraged when large amounts of seaweed are present in the shoreline due to potential toxin formation and survival of pathogenic bacteria. After heavy rainfall, there may be a small time delay before contamination becomes apparent.
