Sønderby is a child-friendly bathing beach extending approximately 880 metres with a width of 10–20 metres. The seabed consists of sand with scattered seaweed growth and stones, and the distance to a water depth of 2 metres is approximately 300 metres. The beach has bathing piers and is situated on Flensborg Fjord. The beach is classified as good quality based on monitoring data from the last four years.

Water

Marine water body on Flensborg Fjord. The bathing area extends approximately 880 metres and is 10–20 metres wide. The seabed is sand with scattered seaweed and stones. Distance to 2-metre water depth is approximately 300 metres. Water is brackish with salinity of 16–24 ‰. Current direction is predominantly northward and primarily flows along the coast.

Location

Located at Sønderbygade, Kegnæs, 6470 Sydals in Sønderborg Municipality, Denmark. Access is available from Sønderbygade and Præstegårdvej, and also via multiple routes from the summer house area. Sønderby Strand Camping is located in the southeastern part of the bathing water area.

Bathing piers are available. Information sign at the beach provides summary information and link to municipal website.

1 June to 15 September.

Water Quality

Classification: Good. Monitoring conducted from 1 June to 15 September annually. Laboratory analysis tests for E. coli and intestinal enterococci. Exceedances of bacterial limit values have been identified in the past four years, with causes traced to misconnections at an overflow structure. The risk from faecal bacteria is primarily from these misconnections at the eastern end, though contamination is typically short-lived due to current action.

Risks

Risk of faecal contamination from misconnections at overflow structures in the eastern portion of the bathing area. Very low risk of cyanobacteria blooms; none have been observed. No previous plant plankton blooms observed during the bathing season. Small risk of seaweed wash-up; large quantities of seaweed can harbour toxins and disease-causing bacteria.
