Germignaga Beach is a sandy-pebbly beach on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore, located in the municipality of Germignaga a few kilometres from the town centre and the city of Luino. The beach has free public access and is equipped with a lido and an adjacent park. The beach is approximately 20 metres wide. The water quality has been classified as poor for the reference period 2019–2022.

Water

Lake Maggiore (Lago Maggiore). Altitude 194 metres above sea level. Area of beach 0.156 km². The hydrographic basin is the Ticino River.

Location

Germignaga, on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore, a few kilometres from the town centre and the city of Luino in the province of Varese, Lombardy. Parking, camper parking area, and nearby residence facilities are available.

Facilities

Lifeguards, showers, defibrillator (DAE), parking, camper parking area, nearby bar and restaurants, residences, rowing club, pier, lakeside promenade.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is poor for the period 2019–2022. Monitoring conducted by the Pallanza buoy (CNR and ARPA) tracks pathogenic bacteria including Escherichia coli, intestinal Enterococci, and cyanobacteria. The wastewater treatment plant serving Germignaga (located in Luino-Voldomino) complies with discharge limits. The SIMILE project manages the lake and collects data from citizens through an app to prevent and limit critical water quality situations.

Risks

Possible critical conditions resulting from unfavourable meteorological conditions such as severe weather events. Short-duration pollution events possible from land runoff, water retention, and various spills. Accidental or unauthorised discharges of wastewater or polluting debris. Seasonal algal blooms are possible. In 2021 a hydrocarbon pollution incident occurred in a nearby zone and was promptly remediated by a specialist company. Potential toxic algal species are cyanobacteria belonging to phytoplankton.
