Spiaggia Ghiaia is a private pebble beach located in Santa Margherita Ligure in the Liguria region. The beach features artificial structures perpendicular to the shore and coastal defence works. It is situated in a highly urbanised tourist and residential area with private beach establishments, dining facilities, and accommodation structures.

Water

Coastal water body of the Portofino-Zoagli system in the Ligurian Sea. Beach area extends 0.478 km. The Fosso San Siro stream flows into the eastern boundary of the bathing water.

Location

Santa Margherita Ligure, Genova Province, Liguria region. Located along the Portofino-Zoagli water body. Public parking is available at Giardini Vittorio Veneto to the east. Viale a Mare Andrea Doria runs along the beach to the north.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2021–2024: Poor. Intensified monitoring is scheduled for 2025 due to the poor classification. Pollution sources include the Rapallo treatment plant (discharge at 2.2 and 2.9 km from coast), the San Siro stream mouth at the eastern boundary, and port-related pollution from the nearby San Margherita tourist marina approximately 300 m to the west.

Risks

Ostreopsis ovata microalgae proliferation has been documented in the region over the past decade. Reference station at Zoagli recorded exceedance of the 30,000 cells/litre limit in July 2022, and values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre in June 2022 and July 2024. Inhalation of aerosols from Ostreopsis ovata causes temporary and reversible respiratory tract problems and possible fever in sensitive individuals. Heavy rainfall upstream can cause stream discharge to transport sewage downstream.
