S. Michele di Pagana is a sandy and pebbly beach near the residential settlement of San Michele di Pagana in Rapallo, Liguria. The beach is surrounded by areas with alternating rocky coast and artificial structures. Public beach areas and private beach establishments with restaurants are available. The bathing water area covers 2.621 km and is classified as excellent based on the 2021–2024 four-year assessment.

Water

Coastal bathing water body in the Ligurian Sea, part of the Portofino-Zoagli water body. The San Michele river mouth (Rio San Michele) flows directly onto the bathing water area. Sewage discharge pipes from Rapallo treatment plant are located approximately 2.0 to 2.9 km from the beach and discharge offshore.

Location

Located in Rapallo, Genova province, Liguria region. The beach is situated near the San Michele di Pagana residential area. Railway infrastructure and State Road 1 (SS1) are located inland from the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (based on 2021–2024 four-year evaluation). The Ligurian Sea has oligotrophic conditions that prevent cyanobacteria blooms. However, microalgae proliferation of Ostreopsis ovata has occurred in the region for approximately one decade. At the reference station Zoagli, the limit of 30,000 cells/litre was exceeded in July 2022. Values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre were recorded in June 2022 and July 2024.

Risks

Short-duration pollution events: increases in stream flow caused by heavy precipitation upstream can transport effluent downstream to the beach. The Rio San Michele mouth discharges directly onto the bathing water area. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae proliferation can cause temporary and reversible respiratory tract effects and fever-like symptoms in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
