Inizio Scogliera is a private, predominantly sandy beach located in front of the urban centre of Rapallo in Liguria. The beach features artificial structures perpendicular to the shoreline and is backed by public gardens, seaside promenades, tourist facilities, and a small harbour. The water body is classified as coastal water with mountainous terrain and low stability.

Coastal water body covering 0.388 km². Part of the Portofino-Zoagli water body.

Location

Rapallo, Genova province, Liguria region. The beach is delimited to the west by the mouth of the Boate torrent and the Duca degli Abbruzzi mole of the tourist marina. Public parking is available.

Facilities

Private beach establishments with services, accommodation facilities, dining, public parking, public gardens (G. Verdi), seaside promenades (Via Gramsci and Vittorio Veneto), tourist office, fishermen's club, and marine services related to the marina.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2019–2022: Poor. Monitoring shows intensified frequency for 2023 due to poor classification status. Pollution sources include urban development, discharge from Rapallo sewage treatment plant (2–3 km offshore), and port-related pollution from the tourist marina approximately 250 metres west of the monitoring station.

Risks

Potential transport of effluent downstream during heavy precipitation events due to increased torrent flow. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal proliferation has occurred in the reference station at Zoagli, with exceedances of 30,000 cells/litre recorded in July 2022 and values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre in July 2018 and June 2022. Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary and reversible respiratory issues and fever in sensitive individuals.
