Spiaggia Via Murcarolo is a small pebbly beach located on a rocky coastline in the Genova Quinto area of Liguria. The beach is free to access and offers tourist services and dining facilities. It is situated in a heavily urbanized residential and tourist context, with railway infrastructure and the SS1 road located inland. The bathing water has been classified as GOOD based on monitoring data from 2020–2023.

Water

Coastal waters (CWA3 – Montane catchment with low stability). The bathing area covers 0.376 km². The water body is known as Genova–Camogli.

Location

Genova (Genoa), Liguria region, Italy. The beach is located in the Genova Quinto area adjacent to the town centre. The area is accessible by the SS1 road with railway infrastructure nearby.

Facilities

Tourist services and dining facilities are available. Animals are permitted in the area.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: GOOD (2020–2023 evaluation period). A sewage pipe is located approximately 330 m east of the sampling station and discharges offshore at approximately 450 m from the shore, outside the bathing water area. No treatment plants are present within the bathing water.

Risks

Short-duration pollution events may occur when upstream conditions combine with heavy rainfall, potentially transporting wastewater downstream via the Rio della Pozzacqua torrent, which enters at the western boundary immediately outside the bathing area. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae proliferation has been detected in the region, with previous exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit recorded at the reference station in Bagnara in July 2019, and values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre in July 2022 and 2023. Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals.
