Santo Amaro is an urban beach in Oeiras located between the Laje river and the São Julião das Maias fort. The beach features an extended gentle slope and is accompanied by the Oeiras promenade. It offers comprehensive beach facilities and dining options. The beach is highly popular throughout the year for various water sports and nautical activities.

Location

Municipality of Oeiras. Located between the Laje river mouth and the São Julião das Maias fort. Coordinates: 38.684326°N, 9.311949°W (ETRS89). The beach is accompanied by the Oeiras promenade with nearby beach support facilities and restaurants.

Beach support facilities including lifeguard services, restaurants and dining options, and equipment rental for water activities.

Season

June 1st to September 30th (2021 season).

Water Quality

Water quality classification 2020 determined under Decreto-Lei 135/09 (June 3rd) as amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012 (May 23rd). Monthly sampling frequency. In 2020, bathing was not advised against or prohibited due to short-term pollution events on any days.

Risks

Short-term pollution may occur due to excessive flow from the Laje river during heavy rainfall or sewerage network failures, lasting 1–2 days depending on weather and local system recovery. Potential microbiological pollution sources include the Laje river, surface water drainage, sewerage network accidents, and illegal discharges in the watershed. An automatic alert system based on data acquisition stations and water quality modelling is being tested to warn users of pollution risks.
