Carcavelos is a long sandy beach with fine golden sand extending from the entrance at Ponta de Rana to São Julião fortress. It is ideal for surfing and bodyboarding. The beach is located in the municipality of Cascais.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2023 under Decreto-Lei 135/09 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Weekly sampling frequency. Potential microbiological pollution sources include the Marianas and Sassoeiros rivers draining into the beach, surface water drainage network, sewerage network failure, and illegal discharges in the watershed. Short-term pollution events lasting 1–2 days may occur due to increased river discharge after rainfall or sewerage network failures. In the 2023 bathing season, there were zero days on which bathing was advised against or prohibited due to short-term pollution.

Risks

Risk of short-term pollution due to discharge from the Marianas and Sassoeiros rivers during heavy rainfall events. Both rivers' flow is diverted to the residual drainage network during the bathing season. Overflow of weirs caused by rainfall can trigger short-term pollution episodes. An emergency lift station near the beach discharges directly to the sea in emergency situations. Cyanobacteria, macroalgae, and phytoplankton proliferation are unlikely.
