Lithuania River 1 - Excellent

Šventosios upės Šeimyniškėlių bathing area is located in Anykščiai, Lithuania, on the Šventoji River, a tributary of the Nemunas basin. The beach is approximately 25–35 metres long with sand substrate and natural shoreline vegetation. The bathing area can accommodate approximately 100 visitors during peak season and has been monitored for water quality compliance with European bathing water standards since 2008.

Water

River type 4 on the Šventoji River, part of the Nemunas River basin. Average water depth is 1.3 metres with a maximum depth of 2.0 metres. Average annual discharge is 37.1 cubic metres per second. Average annual precipitation in the sub-basin is 741 millimetres.

Location

Anykščiai city, Utenos district, in the Anykščiai Regional Park territory. Located at coordinates X=55.5436, Y=25.1240. Parking is available at the beach.

Facilities

Two outdoor toilets, children's play equipment, covered rest areas, parking area, beach volleyball court, trash bins and waste containers. Dogs and other pets are prohibited.

Water Quality

Water quality has met excellent quality requirements from 2018 to 2024 according to Directive 2006/7/EB. The water body has good ecological status. Temporary pollution was identified on 7 July 2023 and 8 August 2023 following microbiological testing that did not meet Lithuanian hygiene standards HN 92:2018. Monitoring includes visual surveillance for cyanobacteria blooms and algae.

Risks

Possible temporary pollution from heavy rainfall events, which typically resolves within 1–2 days. Possible contamination risk from the Elmos stream upstream and potential fuel spillage from vehicle accidents on nearby roads during low water levels and hot weather conditions.
