Lithuania Lake 1 - Excellent

Rubikių ežeras (Kriokšlio) is a bathing area located in the Šventosios river basin in Lithuania. The bathing water has maintained excellent quality status throughout the 2018–2024 monitoring period, meeting all requirements of EU Directive 2006/7/EC. The water body is a natural lake with a sandy and blacksoil beach approximately 200 meters long. The ecological potential of the lake is classified as good.

Water

Lake type 2 in the Nemuno river basin and Šventosios sub-basin. Average water depth is 0.6 meters, with a maximum depth of 1.7 meters. The shoreline is natural, composed of sand and meadow soil. Emergent aquatic vegetation including reeds grows along the water's edge, with deciduous trees and shrubs present on the shore.

Location

Located in Anykščių district, Utenos county, in the Skiemonių administrative unit. The bathing area is situated within the Anykščiai Regional Park territory, which is designated as a Natura 2000 site for bat protection. Coordinates: 55.5110 latitude, 25.3028 longitude.

Facilities

Two outdoor toilets available. Children's play equipment present. Shaded areas available. Car parking provided. Waste management includes trash bins and waste containers; waste removal is performed by UAB Anykščių komunalinis ūkis during the bathing season. Dogs and other animals are prohibited on the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (puiki kokybė) for the 2018–2024 period according to EU Directive 2006/7/EC standards. A short-term pollution event was recorded on 20 February 2024, when fecal enterococci levels exceeded permitted limits during heavy rainfall; water quality returned to normal within 1–2 days. No systematic pollution sources identified. Visual monitoring for cyanobacteria has been conducted; phosphorus and nitrogen levels were not tested.

Risks

Short-term pollution possible during heavy rainfall events due to surface runoff from adjacent forests and meadows. Kriokšlio stream enters the lake upstream of the bathing area and may contribute to water quality variations. One documented short-term contamination event occurred in February 2024 due to heavy rain.
