Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Tange Sø is Denmark's largest hydroelectric lake, covering 6 square kilometres and located in Gudenå valley. The bathing beach on the western side near Ans is approximately 50 metres wide with fine sand and grass recreational areas, surrounded by reed and reedmace vegetation. The lake has a sandy bottom with stones at the bathing area, becoming muddier at greater depths. On very warm summer days, the water may appear green due to algae.

Water

Tange Sø is a hydroelectric lake created in 1918–1921 by a dam in Gudenå valley. It covers 6 square kilometres, is 1 kilometre wide, 13 kilometres long, and reaches a maximum depth of 10 metres. The lake receives water from Gudenåen, Borre Å, and Tange Å rivers. The bathing area has a sandy bottom with stones. Water temperature ranges from 16–20 degrees Celsius during summer.

Location

Tange Sø bathing area is located on the western side of the lake near Ans in Viborg Municipality, Denmark. The bathing spot is approximately 50 metres wide. Parking facilities are available at the site.

Parking, picnic tables and benches, natural climbing structure, barbecue and bonfire areas, laid beach sand, beach volleyball.

Routine water quality monitoring is conducted during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Tange Sø was classified as Excellent water quality for 2023 based on data from 2020–2023. Water quality is monitored routinely during the bathing season for faecal indicator bacteria including E. coli and enterococci. The lake is affected by wastewater discharge and has a catchment area of 1790 square kilometres comprised mainly of agricultural land.

Risks

On very warm summer days, water may appear green due to algae. Risk of algal blooms occurs regularly in nutrient-rich conditions from April to October. Blue-green algae risk exists particularly in late summer following extended warm, sunny, and windless weather, potentially producing cyanotoxins that can cause illness in swimmers and death in larger animals. Waterfowl including ducks and swans use the bathing area and may affect water quality. Overflow events from combined sewer areas in the immediate catchment may cause temporary faecal contamination during heavy rainfall.
