Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Hinge Søbad is a bathing area located on the northern shore of the western end of Hinge Lake in Denmark. The lake is very shallow, with a depth of approximately 2 metres at the end of the bathing bridge. Beach sand has been laid on the lake shore and bottom, and a bathing bridge has been installed. The lake bottom is naturally muddy in character, with reeds growing in the shallow water on both sides of the bathing site.

Water

Hinge Lake is a long and relatively narrow lake with four major tributaries and several minor tributaries, and one outlet. Water exchange is modest relative to the lake's size. Most water is supplied to the western end via Mausing Møllebæk and Haurbæk, while the outlet Hinge/Alling Å is located at the eastern end. The lake is primarily surrounded by agricultural areas and smaller forest areas.

Location

Hinge Lake is situated between Silkeborg and Kjellerup, slightly east of the main road between the two towns. The bathing area is located on the northern shore of the western end of the lake and is accessed from Vinderslevholmvej. A parking area is available near the road.

Facilities

A bathing bridge is available. Information boards about blue-green algae risk are displayed seasonally at the bathing site.

Season

The bathing season runs from 1 June to 1 September, during which the municipality takes water quality samples.

Water Quality

The bathing water in Hinge Lake is classified as excellent based on data from the last four years. The classification is based solely on the content of faecal bacteria in the bathing water. Most small settlements in the lake's catchment area are served by separate sewage systems. One outlet from combined sewer properties discharges to Resdal Stream, but overflows of diluted untreated wastewater from this outlet are expected to occur less than once annually.

Risks

Hinge Lake receives large quantities of nutrients from tributaries that drain large agricultural areas, causing significant algae growth. Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) dominate algae populations during summer periods; some species of blue-green algae can produce toxins that in worst cases can be fatal. Risk of blooms of other plankton algae also exists; when algae growth becomes particularly strong, lake water pH can become very high and may cause discomfort to swimmers. Chemical contamination is possible in case of tanker accidents on roads running along the lake, but this risk is considered limited.
