Ans Søbred is a bathing spot located in Tange Søen, a large artificial lake in Denmark. Swimming takes place from the lakeshore and from a bathing jetty. The beach has sand, but the lake bottom is predominantly muddy with relatively shallow water. The bathing water is classified as excellent based on fecal bacteria content from the last four years.

Water

Tange Søen is a large artificial lake with significant water exchange. The lake flows northward through the Gudenå River and receives several smaller watercourses. The flow direction is northerly. The lake is located across three municipalities: Viborg, Favrskov, and Silkeborg, with the southwestern part including Ans within Silkeborg Kommune.

Location

Ans Søbred is in the northern part of Ans village, accessed via Søgade/Århusvej. The village of Ans is located on the southwestern shore of Tange Søen, north of Silkeborg. The bathing spot is surrounded by urban settlement and agricultural land.

Season

The monitoring and swimming season runs from 1 June to 1 September. Water quality samples are collected during this period.

Water Quality

Bathing water is classified as excellent based on fecal bacteria content from the last four years. Recent years of monitoring during the bathing season show no exceedances of statutory requirements for fecal bacteria. The classification is based only on fecal bacteria content and does not include algae.

Risks

The lake receives significant nutrient loads from the Gudenå River and other inflows, resulting in algae growth that causes cloudy water. Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) are often dominant during summer months and pose a risk of blooms. Some blue-green algae species can produce toxins that may be fatal in severe cases. There is also risk of blooms of other plankton algae, which can elevate pH levels. Possible fecal contamination sources include combined sewer overflows during heavy or prolonged rainfall via Ans Creek and three direct outlets in Ans village upstream of the bathing spot, as well as potential contamination from waterfowl and swimmers. Chemical contamination is possible but considered limited in likelihood. Advisory signs are posted during periods of blue-green algae bloom risk.
