De Små Fisk and Sejs Ladeplads are two bathing sites located on Borresø and Brassø, two large and relatively deep lakes in eastern Silkeborg, Denmark. De Små Fisk features a sandy beach and bathing pier in an enclosed bathing area, while Sejs Ladeplads has a bathing pier but no sandy beach and is situated at the transition between the two lakes. Both sites are surrounded primarily by forest and agricultural areas, with water circulation from east to west driven by the Gudenå river system.

Water

Brassø and Borresø are two large, interconnected lakes with very high water exchange. Brassø has a mean depth of 4.6 metres and a maximum depth of 14 metres. At De Små Fisk, the water is approximately 3 metres deep at the end of the bathing pier. At Sejs Ladeplads, the water depth does not exceed two metres. The lake bed at De Små Fisk is primarily sandy (artificially laid), while at Sejs Ladeplads it is muddy. Reed beds grow in the shallow water on both sides of the sites. Water flows through the system from east to west via the Gudenå river.

Location

De Små Fisk is located west of the village of Sejs and is accessed from Sejsvej, with a large parking area at the road exit. Sejs Ladeplads is located in the village of Sejs itself on the transition between Borresø and Brassø, accessed from Strandvejen. Both sites are east of Silkeborg.

Facilities

Both sites have bathing piers. De Små Fisk has an enclosed bathing area and artificially laid beach sand. Information signs about blue-green algae risks are posted during periods of risk.

Water Quality

The bathing water at Brassø and Borresø is classified as excellent based on data from the last four years. Classification is based solely on faecal bacteria content and does not include algal levels. Monitoring in recent years has shown no exceedances of faecal bacteria requirements during the bathing season.

Risks

There is significant risk of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms during summer months due to high nutrient loading from the Gudenå river system and tributary streams. Some species of blue-green algae can produce toxins that may be fatal in extreme cases, though poisoning risk from bathing is rare. Other plankton algae blooms are also possible and can raise water pH to uncomfortable levels. Potential faecal pollution sources include combined sewer systems in the Borresø catchment (though not in Brassø), treated wastewater from Them Treatment Plant, and improperly treated wastewater from rural properties. The risk of chemical pollution from tanker accidents is considered limited.
