Water Quality

Water quality classification is Excellent based on monitoring results from 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Identified pollution sources include: a consortium wastewater treatment plant in the industrial zone treating urban wastewater discharged into the Picentino River; emergency overflow events from the entire sewerage system along the coastal stretch with discharge into Torrente Mercatello and Picentino River during heavy rainfall; overflow discharge from the Mercatello S5 lifting station serving the treatment plant, which discharges via a canal almost directly at the monitoring station location.

Risks

Emergency sewer overflows occur along the coastal stretch during heavy rainfall. Overflow discharge from the Mercatello S5 lifting station may activate during malfunction events.
