Traunsee in Altmünster is Austria's deepest lake at 191 metres, situated on the northern edge of the Calcareous Alps. The lake covers an area of 24.4 km². It is continuously flushed by the water-rich Traun river, which flows through the lake from south to north. Summer water temperatures remain relatively cool compared to other lakes due to this strong water circulation. Turbidity, particularly in the southern part of the lake, results from suspended sediments carried by water flow or natural limestone precipitation.
