Lovns Strand

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Louns Strand is a narrow beach approximately 300 metres long composed of small stones and sand, located on the eastern shore of Louns Bredning. The beach has very shallow water throughout the area, with the bottom sloping gradually and requiring considerable distance from shore to reach deeper depths. The beach is backed by a large summer house area.

Water

Shallow bay water in Louns Bredning. The beach is narrow, approximately 5–10 metres wide. The entire area is very shallow with a gradual slope. Water flow is minimal along the shallow beach.

Location

The beach is accessed from a car park at Lounsvej with an information board. The harbour and ferry town of Hvalpsund, with shops and restaurants, is located approximately 3 kilometres to the west.

Water Quality

Water is classified as excellent quality based on analysis results from the four preceding years. Neither pollution from swimmers nor from residential properties and agricultural land is considered to have significant impact on water quality. Some properties to the northeast discharge mechanically treated wastewater to ditches and drains with outlets to Louns Bredning, but no direct sewage discharges or overflow structures exist at the beach.

Risks

Large accumulations of macroalgae (seaweed) occasionally occur; bathing is discouraged near significant seaweed deposits due to potential toxin formation in decomposing seaweed and bacterial survival in seaweed protection from UV radiation. No recent blooms of cyanobacteria are known. Risk of phytoplankton growth is very low. Seaweed occasionally washes onto the beach.
